Metro’s distance learning page hosts a full library of online resources to help students learn about recycling, waste reduction, climate change and sustainability.
Composting with Worms (grades K-5)
Students discover the benefits of composting, nature’s way of recycling. This presentation provides a hands-on look at life in the worm bin, engaging observation skills and creating excitement for being part of the compost cycle. The upper grades presentation includes a section on food waste prevention.
Beyond Recycling (grades 1-3)
Students create connections between the everyday items they use and the natural resources they were produced from, our gift from the Earth. Through a collaborative game they will learn what can go into the recycle bin and what doesn’t. Students get to share their ideas about how to reuse, reduce and rethink to create less garbage.
InPESTigations (grades 4-5)
Ants, mice, bees and beetles, are they pests or not? Students share their lived experiences with organisms they may consider to be a pest. Using tools and techniques that are safe for people and the environment, students employ critical thinking and creativity to solve classroom pest case studies.
Garbology (grades 4-5)
Students learn about human connections to natural resources and the history of waste management. Applying this knowledge to their own lives, they will collaborate on a waste investigation focusing on ways to reduce cafeteria garbage going to the landfill through a card game.
