Metro volunteer wildlife monitors highlighted on OPB's "Oregon Field Guide"

Metro restores thousands of acres of natural areas in the Portland metropolitan area, and tracks the success of its long-term efforts with dedicated volunteers. On Thursday, go behind the scenes with one of these volunteers when OPB's "Oregon Field Guide" follows a Metro wildlife monitor as she wades through waterways searching for amphibian egg masses.

Metro sponsors and presents at 2011 Oregon Active Transportation Summit, March 29-30

The Oregon Active Transportation Summit is taking place March 29 and 30. This event is sponsored in part by Metro; staff will be speaking or participating on panels. Summit participants are spending two days in Salem, discussing a range of issues, polishing advocacy skills, and meeting directly with elected representatives to convey legislative goals. The event culminates in a 7:30 a.m. group bike ride to the Capitol on Wednesday, March 30, where participants will have the opportunity to meet with elected officials from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pedal Nation Bike Show will help families get ready to bike this spring

Bicycles are taking over the Oregon Convention Center for the Pedal Nation Bicycle Show on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10. Check out fun, interactive activities that focus on safety, test ride bicycles and see Portland’s largest display of bicycles, gear and apparel all under one roof.

Metro and partners kick off Trolley Trail construction, look forward to fall opening

The Trolley Trail is officially under construction, and it was “all aboard” Tuesday during a kickoff celebration along the trail at Stringfield Family Park in Oak Grove. Metro joined government agencies, community groups and neighbors to commemorate the future six-mile pathway, which traces an old streetcar line between Milwaukie and Gladstone.

Oregon Convention Center: Collaboration toward zero waste

Persistence as the industry leader in sustainability continues to pay off in dividends for the Oregon Convention Center. Since the OCC began its pursuit and achievement of LEED-EB (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - Existing Buildings category) certification nearly ten years ago, diverting waste generated from conventions and events became a high priority for facility staff. Each year the OCC’s diversion rates have increased considerably, keeping garbage out of area landfills and cutting waste disposal costs by roughly half. Some clients of note have fully embraced it. Consider the Food Services of America (FSA) corporation. At its recent Universal Food Show held at OCC earlier this month, FSA event planners established a laudable waste diversion goal rarely seen in the convention and meeting industry: achieve zero waste.

Noted UBC professor, writer visits Metro to speak about building sustainable communities

Patrick Condon, University of British Columbia Professor of Landscape Architecture and author of many books on community design and sustainability, will speak at a brown bag event at Metro on Tuesday, March 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Condon will share new ideas from his latest book, Seven Rules for Sustainable Communities. Condon contends that cities are responsible for 80% of all greenhouse gas emissions largely due to the factors and patterns associated with late 20th-century growth. He goes further to say that we can make significant strides in achieving U.S. greenhouse gas reduction targets by changing the way we build and retrofit our cities. His visit comes during a week in which elected officials and community leaders will be addressing transportation methods and how they impact the livability of our region in a number of forums.

Portland Center for the Performing Arts cleans up its act

PCPA recently finished a two-year process of kicking some toxic characters off of its stages. All of the toxic items were taken to Metro’s hazardous waste facilities where they were either recycled or safely disposed of, while the latex paint was reprocessed into MetroPaint, a recycled interior/exterior latex product.
