Join a conversation with Denny Zane, founder of the MoveLA coalition that achieved voter approval of a $40 billion transportation package for Los Angeles County, California.
As federal and state funding for transportation projects and programs continues to diminish, city and regional governments have been left scrambling for new sources. In 2008, the people of Los Angeles County voted to take ownership of their transportation future and fill that funding gap locally. The voters’ approval of Measure R – a 30-year, half-cent sales tax – will result in $40 billion of self-generated transportation funding, the majority of which will go towards public transportation projects and programs.
But convincing voters to tax themselves an average of $25 per person every year was no easy task; it required strong leadership and support from a broad coalition of varying interests. Denny Zane founded the MoveLA coalition to provide that leadership and build the constituency that is credited with the successful passage of Measure R. In his talk, Denny will share some of the lessons he learned with MoveLA and discuss how local governments can build the public support they need to build their vision for the future.
