Join the Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery to celebrate new entrance columns along Southeast 26th Avenue – a return to the cemetery's historical look. After a brief dedication ceremony at 10 a.m., guests are invited to stay for activities:
- participate in a headstone cleaning workshop
- view a One Stone at a Time survey
- wander the grounds on self-guided tours
- meet the artist who created the columns
- bring a picnic to enjoy by the grave of their favorite resident
- make a donation for a basalt chip from the columns
- buy Friends of Lone Fir merchandise and membership
During the late 1800s to early 1900s, Lone Fir Cemetery’s two entrances were each flanked with basalt columns. The original columns at Southeast 20th Avenue still exist, but the columns on Southeast 26th Avenue went missing at some point, leaving only the bases. Friends of Lone Fir used profits from fund-raisers to commission new columns, and and volunteers partnered with Metro staff to carry the project to completion. Matthew Goddard of Poetry in Stone hand-crafted new columns in the styleof the originals.
