Some agreement, some concerns on South Hillsboro potential

Metro Councilors are beginning to tackle this year's urban growth boundary analysis, the council's first comprehensive look at the boundary since 2002. The agency's chief operating officer, Michael Jordan, recommended South Hillsboro in August as the top candidate for a boundary expansion for residential land.

Council seems to support modest growth boundary expansion

The council addressed the urban growth boundary as a board for the first time at a Tuesday worksession, and at least four councilors said they were comfortable with saying the region will need about 15,000 new residential units to meet state capacity requirements.

Metro teams show their mettle in September Bike Commute Challenge

Both the Oregon Zoo and the Metro Regional Center were healthy competitors in last month's Bicycle Transportation Alliance's Bike Commute Challenge, which is a friendly competition among work sites to encourage employees to bike to work. Overall, nearly 1,300 workplaces and 11,000 people participated in the event this year, logging more than 1 million miles of bike commutes.

The urban growth boundary brings images of Washington County, burgeoning and looking for more land to build homes and factories. The community redevelopment aspect conjures Multnomah County, its industrial sites along the river and transitioning neighborhoods like Gateway and Rockwood needing attention and investment to improve. What does Clackamas County want?

Reserves recommendation disappoints conservationists, developers

The Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development recommended a state commission approve urban and rural reserves. The reserves agreement was the result of lengthy negotiations between Metro and area counties, but stakeholders on both sides felt the decision was too sweeping.

Metro travel options grant applications due Oct. 15

If so, your city, public agency or nonprofit may want to apply for a Metro grant, but you will want to act fast. The application due date of Oct. 15 is rapidly approaching. A total of $533,000 in federal transportation funds is available.

Carefree Commuter Challenge reduces drive-alone trips by 43 percent
