Assessment of e-waste collection and processing issues

Planning and conservation    Managing garbage and recycling    Recycling and waste reduction reports    Assessment of e-waste collection and processing issues

This study provides an initial understanding of the feasibility of expanding collection of electronic waste in the metro area.

Metro estimates there are over half a million households in the tri-county metropolitan area, and that about 70% of these households own a personal computer. Today, computers and televisions are entering the waste stream in increasing numbers.

As Metro prepares to make decisions about what recovery systems and collection systems to put in place for this emerging waste stream, many significant environmental and sustainability issues need to be addressed. In 2003, Metro contracted for a study to help inform its decisions.

This study provides Metro with an initial understanding of the feasibility of expanding collection of electronic waste in the region. Four key questions are addressed:

  1. How much e-waste exists and is expected to be generated in the near future?
  2. Can these wastes be collected and handled, given the existing infrastructure? If not, what new services or facilities are needed?
  3. Can these wastes be processed and reused in an environmentally sound and sustainable manner?
  4. What next steps should Metro take to manage these wastes?
