Councilor Duncan Hwang (he, him, his) represents District 6 on the Metro Council Duncan serves on the Metro Policy Advisory Committee (MPAC), Metro’s Committee on Racial Equity (CORE), and the Transit-Oriented Development Steering Committee. He also helps select awardees for Community Placemaking Grants and co-sponsors the Construction Career Pathways project.
As a Metro Councilor, Duncan shares his experience as an advocate for equitable community development, affordable housing, and safe transportation. As an organizer and community development professional, Duncan has worked on civic and environmental campaigns, as a corporate attorney, and for the past ten years as an advocate for Asian American communities and for people living or working near 82nd Avenue.
Raised in an immigrant family in Michigan, his mother opened the area’s first Chinese restaurant, where interactions with the government were intimidating. As an elected official, Duncan advocates for including community members in discussions and decisions about their neighborhoods. With the collaboration of residents, he has led the development of projects such as the Jade International Night Market and the Orchards of 82nd Avenue, a mixed use building that includes 48 units of affordable housing alongside community space.
Duncan is excited to play a part in Metro’s unique role as a regional table, bringing governments and communities together to solve problems and to center the voices of those who are often left out of government conversations.
