Step 1: Mix equal parts salt and baking soda in a bowl.
Step 2: Add enough water to make a paste.
Step 3: Apply paste to walls of oven. Do not allow baking soda to touch heating elements or wiring. Let stand 5 minutes.
Step 4: Wipe clean with a damp cloth or use a brush on heavy spills.
For heavier cleaning
Step 1: Sprinkle baking soda to cover soiled area.
Step 2: Spray with water until very damp and keep moist by spraying every few hours. Let sit overnight.
Step 3: Scoop out the baking soda and loosened grime and rinse the oven well. If needed, use a blunt knife to pry up large crusty materials.
For really tough jobs substitute washing soda for half the baking soda. Washing soda is more caustic; wear gloves and rise thoroughly.
Use a pumice stick, copper or steel wool scrubbing pad or a non-chlorinated scouring powder. Keep oven enamel wet if using a pumice stick. Test on a small area first to ensure they don't scratch enamel.
Tip: Line your oven with foil to catch drips and spills.
