Data gathered from 2008 to 2019 during the annual September trail count is a resource for planning and developing the region's trail system.

Partners

Every September from 2008 to 2019, volunteers counted and surveyed people biking and walking the Intertwine – the region’s trails, parks and natural areas – using nationally standardized surveying and recording methods. The count was part of the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project’s annual gathering of trail use data at over 90 sites nationwide. Sites were selected by their tie to current or future trail projects.

2018 count by the numbers

During several days in September, volunteers gathered at 121 different sites and observed:

23,971 total users
14,985 pedestrians
8,320 bicyclists
17 people using mobility devices
556 using other modes, such as skateboarding and rollerblading
10,086 female trail users
13,762 male trail users

The Intertwine trail counts and surveys project could not have been accomplished without the help of local partners and volunteers. Metro partnered with the cities of Cornelius, Gresham, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego. Oregon City, Portland, Sandy, Tigard, Tualatin, Vancouver, West Linn and Wilsonville and with Clackamas and Clark Counties, Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Parks and Recreation and Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District on project coordination and training.
