Metro is now accepting applications for grants to fund projects in communities near the Metro Central transfer station in Northwest Portland.

The grants are geared to support community-enhancement projects near the transfer station, which is located off of Highway 30. Eligible project areas include neighborhoods such as Forest Park, Cathedral Park and Linnton; the Northwest District Association and the Northwest Industrial Area, and an area directly adjacent to the St. Johns Bridge.
Metro’s Central transfer station has generated nearly $300,000 available in grants for Northwest Portland neighborhoods for education and community projects that enhance the lives of people living near the transfer station. The grants are funded by a $1 surcharge for every ton of waste generated at the facility.
Community enhancement grants are designed to serve people within the target area of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Residents, community groups, neighborhood associations, nonprofits, schools and school groups, faith and service groups, and government agencies with either nonprofit or other tax-exempt status may apply.

St. John's Food Share, a volunteer-powered food sharing community, is a first-time recipient of the 2019 grant cycle and an example of how Metro's grants can aid in removing obstacles for Metro’s underserved community. “With the help of the generous grant we received from Metro, we will be able to better serve our members and community,” said Kathy Saunders, President of St John’s Food Share.
Metro encourages applications for projects that use a racial equity lens, and that inspire leadership and the substantial involvement of people of color, immigrants, elders, youth, those with disabilities, low-income residents and other underrepresented groups.
