Scheduling for 2018-19
Due to high demand we are asking teachers to identify which series of presentations best fits with their curriculum and schedule just one title/topic.
Enough Already! (3-day series)
Formerly titled Resource Consumption, this series of three middle school presentations delivered over the course of two to four weeks facilitate an in-depth examination of how we consume natural resources and provide students structure and accountability in tackling and measuring a specific behavior change they can make to conserve resources. This series will focus on the following three topics: ecological footprints, food waste, and conscious consumption.
Middle School and High School
Climate Change (2-day series)
Two presentations, delivered no more than one week apart, provide an overview of the science behind climate change, as well as its local and worldwide effects. The lesson invites students to be part of the “new story” of climate change, a story rooted in hope, consensus, community action, and increased quality of life. Students work together to analyze the connection between resource consumption and climate disruption, and discuss eight solutions from Paul Hawken’s 2017 publication Drawdown to motivate them toward science-based personal actions and pledges.
The Secret Life of Our Stuff
In this one-day presentation, students will learn about the life cycle of our things from the extraction of natural resources to end-of-life disposal. Students will play an interactive game to learn the ins and outs of how to recycle correctly in greater Portland and explore how recycling can reduce negative environmental impacts associated with the production and disposal of our stuff.
Presentations include an activity and interactive discussion about actions students can take to reduce their impact on the environment and the earth's resources.
Presentations meet state education standards for science and social studies, are delivered by trained classroom educators, and are offered free of charge for students and teachers.
