Recently, Metro's Glendoveer Golf Course and Tennis Center has been in the news for the addition of footgolf, but with summer in full swing, it is clear that Glendoveer is more than that. It has become a valued community meeting place, where you can walk, run, watch movies, dine and participate in seasonal and holiday events.
This summer, the community has been taking advantage of lessons, summer camps and fabulous free events like Big Screen on the Green, where movies are projected on the driving range. A July showing of “Despicable Me 2” brought more than 700 people who enjoyed face painting, balloon art, popcorn, children’s golf, music and food vendors. Families can look forward to an Aug. 23 showing of the movie “Frozen” starting at 7 p.m. at the driving range.
There has been a lot of interest and excitement around footgolf since it launched this spring. Recently, even a few major league soccer players in town for the MLS All-Star game got in on the action. For those wishing to give it a try, the footgolf course is open Tuesday and Saturday afternoons – it's been popular, so you may want to call ahead for a tee time. Playworks Northwest, an organization that helps more than 6,500 students in the Portland metro area learn teamwork and cooperation during school recess periods, is hosting a footgolf tournament at Glendoveer on Aug. 15-16. Anyone is able to participate, though there is a registration fee.
It is clear from the turnout at these events that the community has been truly embracing the site and all the activities hosted there. I know I’m excited to see what’s next for this great community resource. For more information about upcoming events, tournaments and resources, visit the Glendoveer Golf and Tennis website or call 503-253-7507. I invite you to attend and participate.
