Referred to voters by the Metro Council after two years of engagement with community members and leaders around the region, the Get Moving 2020 measure would have funded more than 150 safety, transit, bridge and roadway projects in major corridors and communities across Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties, as well as additional regional transportation programs.
Today the Metro Council sent voters an unprecedented regional transportation investment measure to make it easier and safer to get around the greater Portland area. The measure, known as Get Moving 2020, would be the largest-ever investment in greater Portland’s transportation system.
A potential transportation funding measure would include $1 billion in programs to improve safety and access to transit. The programs would also help prevent displacement in areas where transportation improvements happen.
Metro is hosting a series of online listening sessions where Metro Councilors will hear public input on a draft transportation funding measure. The first session is Tuesday, June 30 for residents who live in Clackamas County. Three more will follow on July 6, 7 and 9 for people in East Multnomah County, Portland and Washington County respectively. All sessions begin at 5:30 p.m.
Metro Council has directed staff to move forward with a recommendation on potential investments in transportation improvements that they could refer to voters later this year. The direction came a day after a packed hearing where nearly 50 people provided testimony about the proposal.
Voters in greater Portland continue to show broad willingness to pay for needed investments in the region’s transportation system, according to the results of a poll conducted at the beginning of December.
