The spirit of rejuvenation, rebirth and environmental conservation come to life in artworks on view at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center as part of the GLEAN exhibition. GLEAN features five emerging and mid-career artists – Sarah Bernstein, Francesca Berrini, Alyssa Kail, Michelle Liccardo, and Whitney Nye – displaying sculptures, collages and bas-relief works made from discarded objects taken from Metro Central transfer station.
Within Disjecta at Nisus Gallery is a solo show, “Waste Not,” by Portland artist Natalie Sept. Sept was given access to the Metro Central transfer station and created a series of paintings that capture the seemingly uneventful daily drama of the workers who receive and separate the dizzying volume of discards that migrate through a busy transfer station. The shows raise awareness about our trash habits and ideas about trash as a resource.
