Metro partners with the Oregon Green Schools Association to provide technical assistance and recognition for school waste reduction achievements.
The Oregon Green Schools Association (OGSA) is a statewide non-profit that was established as a cooperative effort among local governments, private businesses and school districts to formally recognize schools for their waste reduction achievements. Metro partners with OGSA to help schools set up and maintain programs, and to recognize schools for their achievements.
There are three levels of achievement: Green School, Merit Green School and Premier Green School. As schools establish and meet goals to expand their recycling programs, they can apply to receive certification from the Oregon Green School program. Achieving the initial Green School level creates a foundation of student-oriented recycling and begins a waste reduction ethic.
Merit schools go beyond a student-run recycling program. They create a school-wide policy for waste reduction, evaluate their waste annually and help another school establish a well-run recycling system.
Premier schools do everything possible to create a least-waste environment. They reduce by purchasing no-waste, reusable or recyclable supplies and those that contain recycled content. Premier schools also emerge as community leaders in recycling and waste reduction.
Metro partners with OGSA for the following areas:
