Limited edition color helps region look good while going green
Metro and local custom builder Hearth and Home Residential Construction Inc. have teamed up to launch a new limited edition color of MetroPaint recycled latex at the 2010 NW Natural Street of Dreams presented by John L. Scott.
New color "Refinement," named after the Hearth and Home abode whose exterior features the warm taupe-brown hue, joins Metro's award-winning line of environmentally friendly paint that keeps reusable resources out of landfills.
"This collaboration offers a fun, inspiring and up-close look at the connection between sustainability and livable neighborhoods," said David Bragdon, Metro Council president. "In addition to looking terrific on Hearth and Home Construction's Street of Dreams house, recycled paint helps reduce the need for new paint, in turn reducing pollution from the mining and extraction of raw materials."
The Street of Dreams show, open through Aug. 29 at the new Cresap Summit development off Skyline Boulevard in northwest Portland, marks its 35th anniversary with seven homes that combine luxury and earth-friendly building practices. Produced by the Home Builders Association of Metropolitan Portland, this year's event includes some homes with Earth Advantage or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification.
"Reusing quality materials that last is just good, old-fashioned common sense that still holds today," said Karey Cresap, founder and president of Hearth and Home Construction. "Working with Metro gave us the opportunity to use a sustainable product that enhances curb appeal and reflects our company's values."
Since 1992, Metro has recycled more than 1 million gallons of latex paint, decreasing the region's carbon footprint and keeping reusable resources out of the landfill. Metro collects paint from residents and businesses through its household hazardous waste program, processing quality latex into a variety of colors for interior and exterior use. The 100 percent recycled paint, named a 2008 Top 10 Green Product by Sustainable Industries business magazine, is certified by Green Seal and the Master Painters Institute and good toward Earth Advantage and LEED credits.
Oregon's new first-in-the-nation industry program for paint recycling now makes it even more convenient to drop off unwanted paint and conserve natural resources. As a participant, Metro will continue accepting paint at its household hazardous waste facilities. Industry nonprofit PaintCare Inc. will manage the pilot program, including safe disposal of oil-based paint, and has launched additional collection sites in the Metro region and statewide. Miller Paint Stores and the MetroPaint Swan Island store now offer refinement at less than $11 per gallon. Other popular MetroPaint colors are also available at the above stores, select Fred Meyer locations and several independent retailers in Oregon and Washington.
