How to get an automation tag
To save customers time and money, Metro utilizes an automated weighing system that is activated by RFID (radio frequency) identification tags. Tags issued to Metro account customers eliminate the likelihood of being staged in line with self-haul customers. RFID tags allow Metro account customers use of the separate automated lanes.
Tags are assigned to specific trucks and are installed by the scalehouse staff. Installation includes riveting the tag onto the truck. Customers are responsible for requesting tags and reporting the sale or loss of their truck to prevent misuse. Metro has processed more than two million transactions utilizing the RFID system.
To receive an automation tag after obtaining a Metro credit account, stop by the main scalehouse during public hours at Metro South or Metro Central transfer stations.

Hours of operation
Metro account holders who do not use the automated access lanes are limited to public hours at Metro South or Metro Central transfer stations.
Metro account holders that have vehicles with RFID tags and use the automated access lanes are given greater access and cheaper fees. The access hours for these vehicles are:
- Metro South : 3 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
- Metro Central : 2 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
How to authorize a truck
Each Metro account customer will be asked to inform Metro about their vehicles using the account at a Metro transfer station. The information about the vehicles will be entered into the scalehouse information files for customer convenience. The drivers of trucks not in the information file will be asked for proof of authorization to use the account.
To protect your account from unauthorized charges, please observe Metro's policy for charging to your account. The driver of a company vehicle may charge to an account if one of the following conditions is met:
- there is a written authorization for the vehicle and the license plate or Metro decal is in our database
- the vehicle is permanently marked with the company name
- the vehicle is registered to the company
A written letter of authorization on your company letterhead that has the following information:
- account number
- license plate number of said vehicle
- duration of the authorization (i.e., for a specified period of time or permanent)
The authorization letter can be presented to scalehouse staff or faxed to any one the following locations:

New organic rates
Effective March 1, 2012, Metro will raise the rate to accept organic materials at Metro South and Metro Central transfer stations. The new rate of $51.14 per ton reflects an increased cost to transport and compost these materials along with revised volume estimates at the two transfer stations.
Volume estimates used for this adjustment run through June 2012. Metro anticipates that rates for these materials will be reviewed and adjusted at the same time that solid waste tip fees adjust.
It is important to note that loads of residential organics can be received at Metro Central Station during all hours of commercial waste acceptance. At Metro South Station, acceptance of this material will be limited to Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. (7 p.m. March 1 to Sept. 30) and on Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. only.
Inbound residential organic waste loads will be directed to the appropriate tipping area (Bay 4 for Metro Central and Bay 3 for Metro South) and inspected by site personnel to ensure the loads meet minimum acceptance standards. Loads not meeting these standards shall be rejected and charged the municipal solid waste rate of $89.53 per ton plus a transaction fee.
