The Executive Council for Active Transportation hosted a three day workshop on active transportation where European experts to shared their perspectives on biking and walking in the region.
What we heard from the European experts
Why do European cities choose to invest in bicycling and walking? How do freight and active transportation work together in Amsterdam? What does it take to have 30 percent of trips made by bike? Why do American companies locate their European headquarters in bicycle-friendly cities?
To investigate these and other questions, the Executive Council for Active Transportation hosted a three day Transatlantic Active Transportation Workshop sponsored by Metro and the German Marshall Fund. The workshop included presentations and panel discussions with European delegates and local experts. The workshop was held in multiple locations across the region in order to highlight a variety of approaches to active transportation for different communities.

Three days of events
The Transatlantic Active Transportation Workshop took place on Wednesday, Sept. 30 through Friday, Oct. 2. Workshop events were held in Lake Oswego, Beaverton and Portland.

Panel discussions brought together local elected officials, transportation and land use planners, government staff, bike and walking advocates, trail advocates, non-governmental agencies and business leaders. Planners and policy makers from Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Brussels and Lyon, France presented a variety of topics related to active transportation; ranging from solutions for suburban environments, bike sharing programs, integrating with public transportation and the role of trails in a regional system.
Business leaders, policymakers, and decision makers attended discussions with two key leaders from Brussels and Amsterdam who have made the connection between what is good for business, biking and walking. Geert-Pieter Wagenmakers is a senior advisor on traffic and transportation for the Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam, representing over 200,000 businesses. Adelheid Byttebier has addressed issues of mobility and economic development as a member of the Brussels regional parliament and as Minister of Social Affairs, Health and Economic Opportunities. Registration is required.
The final event of the workshop featured perspectives from local and visiting experts summing up the three days of presentations, tours, and discussions. What level of investment is needed to take the city of Portland and the region to the next level? How can we achieve upwards of 30 percent mode share of biking? How can we make all users feel safe and comfortable walking and biking for work and play? How can we achieve an active transportation network in the region?
