Urban area sources: 1990-2006 Portland, Oregon only, and Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-Washington data are from both the FHWA in Washington, D.C., and from the ODOT and WDOT Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) programs in Salem, Oregon and Olympia, Washington, respectively. The 2008 urban area data only, are from the ODOT and WDOT HPMS offices directly by e-mail. For 1990-2007, DVMT/ person data can be located in the FHWA publication 'Highway Statistics'; Table HM-72, 'Urbanized Areas - Selected Characteristics,' Publication No. FHWA-PL-06-009.
National average source: The National Average of DVMT/ person is calculated from 'Total DVMT,' for all Federal-Aid Urban Areas, divided by total 'Estimated Population,' as it appears on Sheet 9, of Table HM-72; which lists all the Federal-Aid Urbanized Areas in the U.S. The 1990-2007 data is located in the above cited booklet and website. The 2008 data has not been published as of Oct. 19, 2009.
Federal-Aid Urban Area: A "Federal-Aid Urbanized Area" is an area with 50,000 or more persons that, at a minimum, encompasses the land area delineated as the urbanized area by the Bureau of the Census" (from Roadway Footnotes for HM-72, page V-84 of 'Highway Statistics 2007' - listed above). Portland-Vancouver, Oregon-Washington is a Federal-Aid Urbanized Area.
