Sustainable living › Composting guide › Composting problems and solutions
As simple as it may be to set up a composting system, there are problems that even seasoned professionals encounter - here are a short list of issues along with recommendations for success.
There are several things that can stall or slow down the composting process. Take a look at your compost pile and see if any of these issues are present:
Undesirable animals such as rats, raccoons and insects may be attracted to meat or fatty food scraps or too much fruit and vegetable material. Remove fatty food or excess kitchen scraps from pile, turn it to increase temperature and balance carbon to nitrogen ratio, and use animal-proof compost bin.
Your compost is too wet and is not getting enough air – it is rotting and not decomposing. Turn compost to aerate it and add dry, absorbent material.
