What are food banks?

Food banks are community-based professional or volunteer-run organizations that collect food from a variety of sources, store the food in a warehouse, then distribute it to hungry families and individuals through a network of local agencies. Although food banks tend to collect less perishable foods such as canned goods because they can be stored for a longer time, many also have the capability to safely collect, store and distribute fresh and frozen foods. Modern food banks are equipped with commercial-grade freezers and coolers and many have commercial collection vehicles with large refrigeration or freezer units.

Agencies served by food banks and food rescue programs include community centers, soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, senior programs, recovery programs and child care centers. Many of these agencies visit the food bank each week to select fresh produce and packaged products for their meal programs, food box distributions or pantries.
