Strategies for a sustainable and prosperous region

A report from Metro's chief operating officer

Following four years of study, analysis and collaboration with regional partners, including elected officials and residents, Metro released a report Sept. 15 containing recommendations for how the region can grow over the next 50 years toward making the greatest place. The recommendations focus on maintaining the urban growth boundary as much as possible to protect natural areas, farms and forestland, investing in and making the most of existing community assets, and creating good jobs for the residents of the region.

In September 2005, the region received a forecast that more than one million more people would live here within 25 years. That realization kicked off a new way of planning for growth in our region, including focusing more on the outcomes that we want – protecting natural areas, reinvesting in our local communities, and creating good jobs – and integrating major land use, transportation and investment decisions into one process. This course has led to the Metro chief operating officer report contained here. This document is not a decision, but a set of recommendations intended to invite a regional conversation. Local elected officials and the Metro Council will make a series of decisions related to these recommendations through the end of 2010.

Public input

"How do you think the region should grow?" That was the general question that residents were asked during the 30-day Making the Greatest Place comment period. Review the engagement strategies and public response to find out what people had to say about the urban growth report, the Regional Transportation Plan update and urban and rural reserves in the documents below.
