In a groundbreaking collaboration to keep more reusable paint out of landfills, Metro has teamed with Portland-based Miller Paint Co. Inc. to carry MetroPaint recycled latex in all of the retailer’s 20 Portland-area stores from Salmon Creek, Wash., to Salem, Ore. The public-private partnership dramatically expands access across the Metro region to high-quality, low-cost, environmentally friendly paint made locally.

“We’re pleased to partner with Miller Paint, a local business that has long been a part of the community,” said David Bragdon, Metro Council president. “This public-private partnership reflects our region’s commitment to conserving natural resources by preventing waste, reusing valuable materials and recycling.”

Miller Paint initially will sell eight colors of Metro’s award-winning product in 1- and 5-gallon containers. Current MetroPaint prices at Miller Paint stores will range from only $9 to $11 per 1-gallon can and $39 to $49 for 5-gallon pails. The 100 percent recycled paint, named a 2008 Top 10 Green Product by Sustainable Industries business magazine, is certified by Green Seal™ and the Master Painters Institute and good toward Earth Advantage® and LEED® credits.

“Miller Paint has always strived to limit our carbon footprint in all our manufacturing and store operations and to manufacture and sell products that minimize environmental impact,” said Steve Dearborn, CEO and president. “This innovative partnership with Metro is another important way that we can help our community and the environment.”

Since 1992, Metro has recycled more than 1 million gallons of latex paint, helping the environment and keeping reusable resources out of the landfill. Through its household hazardous waste program, Metro collects paint from residents and processes eligible batches into a variety of colors for interior and exterior use. Its line of paints also is available at the MetroPaint Swan Island store in Portland and at selected independent retailers in Salem, Eugene and White City, Ore., and in Vancouver, Seattle, Spokane and Tumwater, Wash.
